Pets have always been big business, but with the rise of social media the industry is now bigger than ever. More and more people are creating Instagram, Twitter and even Facebook pages that are strictly for their pawsome pets. In fact, 17% of millennials have social media accounts for their pets — and that number only seems to be growing. From Doug the Pug and Grumpy Cat to Lil Bub and Toast (the adorable King Charles Cavalier puppy), these pups, cats and even exotic animals have the pet-tential to bring in quite a few extra dollars for their human counterparts.

If you thought sponsored content was reserved for human celebrities, think again. Pampered pets now enjoy a level of social media fame that can even bring in revenue through partnerships with big brands like Purina, Mercedes and Pizza Hut — give these model dogs a round of appaws! Pets are more influential than ever, and the numbers don’t lie. According to the Wall Street Journal, if a dog surpasses a million followers, it can net $10,000 for a single post!

A New York-based talent agency, The Dog Agency, was created for internet pet influencers. These pets are even making guest appearances now — from talk shows and TV shows, to platforms as big as the silver screen. Talk about barking up the right tree!

You may be looking to quit your day job and commit to making your pooch insta-famous. Competition is ruff, but it’s not impawsible. To garner the amount of followers and catch the attention of big brands, a considerable amount of time and effort — and creativity — is needed. Brands aren’t limited to the pet industry per se — pets are influencing all industries now. For example Boo, the famous Pomeranian, was named the official spokesdog for Virgin America in 2012 and starred in a campaign which featured photos of him in an airplane along with advice for people traveling with pets.
