It’s the time of year where folks spend more time in the kitchen, whipping up various comfort foods and treats. While this leaves our human stomachs grumbling, certain holiday foods can leave your pets with a severe bellyache, or worse. To avoid any mishaps, below is a list of 7 common holiday foods that are toxic to your furry friends. Keep their paws off and they’ll be just fine!

  1. Bird Bones

  2. Turkey/Chicken Skin

  3. Onions, garlic and other bulb vegetables

  4. Grapes, raisins, and currants

  5. Desserts and sweets

  6. Stuffing

  7. Nuts

If you’re having company over, be sure that guests know not to give your dog table food. While it may be tempting to give in to those puppy eyes, it will only lead to upset stomachs later on. Cooked bird bones can splinter, potentially tearing into your dog’s stomach, causing serious harm. Grapes, raisins, and currants can lead to serious kidney failure, while chicken skin is much too salty for your four-legged friends.

Don’t want your pet to feel left out? They can enjoy a nice helping of unseasoned meat, with veggies like sweet potatoes and green beans. If your dogs are particularly fond of treats, you can whip up some healthy and delicious snacks for them, like the one below:

Pumpkin Oatmeal Spice Treats

Your pups don’t want to miss out on this tasty action! Treat them to this simple snack and they’re tails are sure to begin wagging. Ingredients you’ll need include:

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees, combine the above ingredients to form a dough, and simply shape your cookies onto a baking sheet; pop them into the oven for 30 minutes and – ta-dah! – you’ll have some pawsome treats made with wholesome ingredients in no time!

As long as you steer clear of the toxic foods, you’re sure to have a safe and healthy holiday season with your pets. It may be helpful to keep a chart in your kitchen or dining room of foods that are harmful to pets to be sure they never get their paws on anything toxic! Happy and safe howlidays to you all!
