Much like their human counterparts, dogs love a good treat from time to time…ok, they love treats all the time. And as much as we’d love to give in to those puppy dog eyes, we need to stand strong for the sake of their health! Again, like humans, all dogs are dif-fur-ent and their bodies respond in unique ways to certain brands of dog food and treats. October 10th marks National Pet Obesity Awareness Day and it’s important to keep vigilant and learn what types of food can help to stave off obesity in dogs.

Did you know that, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), an estimated 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese? As the numbers continue to grow at an alarming rate, it’s our duty as pet owners to work towards lowering pet obesity. Pet obesity is usually caused by owners overfeeding their pets, giving them table scraps, and not giving them enough exercise.

The consequences of excess fat in dogs and cats can lead to the following medical issues:

  • Reduced Life Expectancy
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Kidney Disfunction
  • Respiratory Disorders
  • Orthopedic Disease
  • Skin Disorders
  • Cancer

Luckily, there are ways to combat pet obesity and it all starts with the food we feed our beloved dogs! When reading nutrition labels, here’s what you should be looking for:

  • Low in fat
  • High in protein
  • Maintains lean muscle
  • Contains a high level of vitamins and minerals
