October is not only Adopt-A-Dog Month, sponsored by the American Humane Association, but the month also marks Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month sponsored by the ASPCA. In honor of this beautiful month, I’d like to write a letter to all shelter dogs around the world. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Dear Scruffy Shelter Dog,

You may be scared right now. Dogs are barking around you, your cage may seem a little too small and people come to play with you sometimes…but then they leave. You may dream of running through the grass and peeing on fire hydrants and curling up at your hooman’s toes at the end of a long day. Don’t worry, you’ll find your furever home really soon.

One day soon, a little girl or boy will spot you as they’re family walks through the shelter. You’ll lick their little fingers and wag your tail and before you know it, you’ll have found your people. Or, perhaps it will be a young couple, looking to adopt a dog as they start a life together. They’ll find you in the corner, look into your eyes and immediately form an unbreakable bond.

But I have scars. I’m an older dog. I don’t know how to act outside of this shelter. I’m not even sure what breed I am!

Don’t worry, good boy (or girl!), you’ll be OK. You’re a lovable dog no matter your look, age or disposition. There is an incredible family looking for you! They’ll find you soon, I promise.

Shelter dogs like you are different, but that’s what makes them so special. That’s what makes dogs like you so incredibly loving and happy when they finally do find they’re pawsome people. There are so many animal loving advocates who are fighting for your rights and who work day and night to make sure you are safe and that you will be adopted. Don’t lose hope my furry friend!

I hope you know that we are thinking of you not just this month, but every month. Every day. We are thinking of your sweet face and your ability to love and cuddle and run and chase and nap and play and enjoy yummy treats like peanut butter and snap peas! You’re an incredible dog; don’t ever forget it!

I love you sweet, scruffy shelter dog. We all do.

Xo,

An avid animal lover
